Yukon Cares was founded in September 2015 by Raquel de Queiroz. We are a local group of committed volunteers in the territory working together to bring refugee families to our community. It is unaffiliated, non-denominational, non-partisan and community-based. We are partnered with the Catholic Church through the Diocese of Vancouver, which is a federally recognized Sponsorship Agreement Holder, to receive donations.
We recognize that all kinds of people can become refugees – people who live in fear of being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, nationality, or membership in a particular social group, or of a political opinion – and no one is a refugee by choice.
We function strictly through the work of volunteers. All of the donations received go directly to the family or to expenses related to fundraising (printing, materials, etc.). Our work is done through several committees and subcommittees, including:
- Steering Committee
- Settlement Committee
- Fund Raising Committee,
- Sponsorship support, and
- Communications Committee
We have seen an incredible amount of assistance from Yukoners, and have received support from both the Federal government and the Yukon government.
